Our Yumologists have been dying to try making their own caramel from sweetened condensed milk, and today they got the chance. We're using the technique of boiling tins of sweetened condensed milk to make our own caramel to put into our Caramel Apple Pie.

If this doesn't scream fall we don't know what does!

1 tin of sweetened condensed milk (we actually used the low-fat version and it turned out quite well)

  • Submerge the tin in boiling water for 2 - 2 1/2 hours. You will probably have to refill your water after 1 hour to make sure the can remains submerged.
  • Drain the water and use oven hits to remove the hot can. 
  • Carefully open the tin and beware of the spray that may initially come out.

1 tin of apple pie filling
2 tbsp of brown sugar
1 tsp of cinnamon

  • Mix all of these ingredients together in a large bowl.

1 store bought graham cracker crust

  • We know, we know, you can make your own if you have the time, but we were pressed today.
  • Add the caramel to the bottom of the crust.
  • Layer the apple pie filling on top of the caramel.
  • Add a layer of cool whip on top of the apple pie filling OR serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream - a la mode!

A great recipe for fall and one you and your family can enjoy making together, especially since making the caramel could be a fun science project for the kids.
