Why is it that one of the first questions people ask you when you tell them you're pregnant is "Have you had any strange cravings?" Although this Yumologist has only recently entered the world of pregnant women I can safely say that my cravings have been minimally strange.

I went through a full-on vegetarian phase when the slightest hint of meat would make me gag, and then there was the obsession with fresh fruit, but the latest appetite demands require hot & spicy or nothing at all.

Why do these cravings happen and why are they so intense? Many studies show that senses are heightened when you're pregnant. Sight, smell, sound, touch and, yep, taste too are all on high-alert when you're eating for two. Since you can taste things more intensely, you crave things more intensely and you often need to feed your hunger right away.

Super-sensitive taste buds are not the only reason cravings happen. Cravings are a way of getting your attention when your body is in need of nutrition. Low on protein? Chances are you'll want to devour a 12 oz. steak. Need calcium? Your body will cry out for dairy. Since you're eating for two you're also experiencing two different nutritional demands that are difficult to ignore.

While the idea of bologna and peanut butter sandwiches might seem ridiculous, do yourself and your baby a favor and listen to what your body is telling you. No matter how strange the combination there's always a reason behind it.
