While many of our posts often focus on different recipes, products and foods, our Yumologists want to take a quick time-out from our original routine to build awareness of a growing phenomenon in the medical and culinary communities.

Celiac Disease, also known as "Gluten Intolerance" now affects 1 in every 133 Americans who come from a wide range of ethnic and medical backgrounds. Celiac Disease is difficult to diagnose but fairly simple to treat - the main treatment being a complete dietary overhaul that excludes wheat, rye, barley, oats and any products that are a variation on these including flour and beer.

At first excluding these items from one's diet sounds reminiscent of a carb-free lifestyle, but it's slightly more complicated than that. You can never exclude 100% of the carbohydrates your body needs and therefore people with Celiac Disease have to find alternative gluten-free products and recipes that will give them the complete nourishment they need.

Luckily enough the growing trend in Celiac Disease has caused a boom in gluten-free products, recipes, publications, even foodies! Some people who are not diagnosed with Celiac Disease are electing to make the switch to a gluten-free lifestyle in the hopes of improving their health and weight goals.
